India plans sovereign AI infrastructure with government-owned, air-gapped systems

The Indian government is drawing up a sovereign AI map that will identify critical sectors and data categories, people aware of the matter told The Economic Times. Technology infrastructure in the most sensitive category, including GPUs, would be completely on-premises, entirely government-owned and air-gapped; critical sectors such as defence could figure in this tier, the people said. Less sensitive but still important categories would be managed under a separate framework in which the state owns hardware such as GPUs while private companies run and operate it. The plan is at the drawing-up stage, and the officials did not disclose a timeline.
