raises €100 million for manoeuvrable hypersonic strike systems
Hypersonica: prototype launch file photograph from its website. Not a November 2 flight.Hypersonica, a British-German company developing long-range hypersonic strike systems, has raised €100 million in Series B funding co-led by Lightspeed and General Catalyst. Existing backers Plural, 201 Ventures and Germany's Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND) also participated. Hypersonic flight means travelling faster than five times the speed of sound. The company is developing manoeuvrable systems, which must withstand intense aerodynamic heating while maintaining controlled flight. Hypersonica says its HS-1 prototype exceeded Mach 6 over more than 300 km in a February test. Those are company-reported test results, not confirmation that an operational weapon is in service. The money will increase flight-testing cadence, accelerate system development and expand engineering and manufacturing in the UK and Germany. The company targets developed deep-strike systems by 2029.
