Proxima signs Japanese partnerships for fusion magnets, heating and fuel systems

Proxima Fusion signed two memoranda of understanding in Tokyo on October 28, with Fujikura and Kyoto Fusioneering, to develop supply chains and technologies for its planned stellarator fusion plants. The agreements concern future cooperation and feasibility work, not firm orders or a commitment to build a factory. With Fujikura, Proxima will assess the technical, commercial and economic requirements for high-temperature superconducting tape manufacturing in Germany, including a potential supply chain in Lower Saxony. The tape is used in compact, high-field fusion magnets. Proxima estimates demand of around 20,000 kilometres for its planned Alpha demonstrator and 40,000 kilometres for each Stellaris plant; those are forward-looking requirements. The Kyoto Fusioneering agreement expands work on next-generation gyrotrons for plasma heating and fusion fuel-cycle technology. It supports Proxima's roadmap towards an Alpha demonstrator in the early 2030s and a later commercial stellarator. Neither the agreements nor the roadmap establish that commercial fusion power has been achieved.
